Recipe: Choc banana kefir-shake

Fermentation is so hot right now! Kefir is a fermented milk drink, originating from Caucasus region of Eurasia. After reading about kefir’s many health benefits, particularly for the digestive system – and even as an anxiety-buster – I wanted to try creating an easy and tasty shake.


This choc banana kefir-shake includes simple, classic milkshake flavours, and makes a good breakfast drink, or – being high in protein – as a pre- or post-workout snack. This recipe is really flexible, too – if you love veg in your smoothies, why not add a handful of spinach?

Choc banana kefir-shake


  • 250ml kefir
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • Half a frozen or fresh banana
  • 150ml milk
  • Optional: 1 tsp maca powder for a malty flavour
  • Optional: Handful of fresh or frozen strawberries for added sweetness


  • Simply blend all the ingredients together until smooth. Serve immediately.
