Hello, and a rather belated happy new year! Sorry it’s been quiet on the blog front for the past few weeks. January was a bit of a whirlwind of changes at work, getting to grips with driving lessons (yup, learning for the first time aged 29…!), and wedding venue hunting (James and I got engaged over Christmas, yay!). Recipe: Winter smoothie

I’m really pleased with this one! I decided to make a smoothie especially for winter – for enjoying after a chilly run; as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up; or just for the appley, tangy, gingery joy of it. Drink cold, straight from the blender, or heat gently in a pan for a wintery drink that will really warm the cockles. This recipe yields one large serving.

Recipe: The best ever Christmas cake {part 1!}

Tomorrow is Stir-Up Sunday! For me, this is the real start of the festive season. I know it’s traditional to make a Christmas pudding this weekend, but I usually make a Christmas cake; I love the decoration element, and how easily it can be shared around family and friends to spread a little festive joy. Over the years I’ve tried out various different recipes for Christmas cake, but this is the best one I’ve found. It doesn’t involve soaking fruit overnight, and the final result is gorgeously fruity, moreish and (sorry, Mum!) …moist. I’ve made many a cake which turned out to be slightly bitter or dry – such a disappointment after all the time and effort you put in – but this recipe is spot on.

Recipe: Kale and butterbean stew

This is an outrageously quick and simple weeknight supper – from pan to plate in 15 minutes. I’m almost embarrassed to post it here, because it is so basic – but it’s a useful, adaptable recipe which I hope will prove useful. The kale can be substituted with whatever leafy greens you have in the fridge. You might want to at least double the quantity of the greens if you’re using something water-heavy like spinach, as it will wilt down.

Recipe: Pear and frangipane tart

Last weekend was one of those really special weekends, the joy of which lingers well into the following week. A big bunch of my university friends and I got together in the beautiful Cotswolds for two days of catch-ups, amazing food (tartiflette, crumble, slow-cooked lamb…), long muddy walks, wine, board games, and so much tea. It was quite perfect really. I was in charge of bringing Friday night’s pudding, and I chose Angela Hartnett’s pear and frangipane tart.
